JoEllen “Joey” Scambler, age 78, of Mt. Prospect, died on June 28, 2017 at AMITA Hospice Residence from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Joey was born on August 30, 1938 in Canton, Illinois. She was the third child of Wilbur and Helen Hoffman. The family later moved to Belvidere where Joey’s parents continued farming and teaching.
JoEllen graduated from Belvidere High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Illinois State University. She married John “Jack” Scambler in 1965 and taught elementary school for several years before they had their sons, Douglas and John. They raised their family in Mt. Prospect, Illinois. When the boys were older, she taught preschool at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where Joey and Jack have been active members of the church congregation for 35 years.
JoEllen is survived by her husband of 52 years, John “Jack” Scambler of Mt. Prospect, her two children, Doug Scambler (Cynthia Hartung) of Laramie, Wyoming, and John Scambler (Heather Scambler) of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and her four grandchildren, Billie, Benjamin, Finnegan and Keelan. Joey is also survived by her sister, Jane Schleeter, her sister-in-law, Jane Gable, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Helen, and brother, Gene Hoffman.

Visitation Friday, July 7th, 3:00pm to 8:00pm, at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd. (at Northwest Highway) Mt. Prospect.
Memorial Funeral services, Saturday, July 8th, 11:00am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 100 S. School St. Mt. Prospect. Rev. Kris Whitby will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or AMITA Hospice Residence.
